About us

The Cottage Studio comes to life with color play as our windmill spins away in the breeze. The dye baths glow with color, the meerkats find a straggling fiber to toy with, the chickens peep in the window on the regular, and the pups watch and wait for the next beautiful batch to be hung to dry. Ducklings play outside, and sunbirds visit our blooms.

Color is everywhere – inspiration is anywhere you look! Yellow Cottage Yarn is dyed right on our farm in the Free State using cotton yarn produced right here in South Africa. Local is lekker!

Yellow Cottage Yarn started out with a love of yarn – shall we say an addiction. Can you ever really have too much color or too much yarn? As I began my crochet journey with mosaic crochet, I also developed a passion for playing with color. There was nothing better than visiting my local yarn shop and putting together color combinations for my ever growing yarn stash.

Learning about types of fiber and fiber quality came next as I believed for the amount of time you work on a project, you deserve an affordable fiber that is high quality. Working with my friend and owner of a local yarn shop, we agreed that a good quality, locally dyed line of yarn is just what was needed. Yellow Cottage Yarn was proud to bring a soft beautiful cotton range of vibrant colors to life. I believe yarn
dyeing is an art and each skein is created with love and intention!

Not only do we offer our Cottage Cotton range offering some consistency and colors that can be repeated, but we also have enjoyed offering hand painted yarns. A unique range of yarns that inspire fellow crocheters to create! Oh and don’t forget soft and chunky Plush or our shiny super soft cotton/bamboo blend. They sky is the limit in the studio!

Continue to be inspired.
And please never shy away from using color!

A Note About Colors And Dye Lots
Yellow Cottage Yarn is hand dyed in small batches so there may be slight variation between dye lots. Each skein is a unique work of art. Color variation may exist between dye lots, however, we try to keep colors as consistent as possible. Please note due to differences in device screens and settings, colors may vary from device to device. We urge you to buy enough for your project from the same dye lot, and if you would like additional photos of the yarn you have chosen or pictures of colors together, please let us know. We are happy to assist you with a more custom request and also to be sure the colors are just right for your project (or yarn stash for that matter!). So please reach out, we are here to help and know how important color is!

Washing Instructions
Yellow Cottage follow general washing instructions for hand dyed natural fibers. Hand Wash, separately, in cold water using a mild soap. Dry Flat. Residual dye may still remain on the fiber of darker colors, however, we go through intense washing in studio to prevent this as much as possible. Do not use bleach. Dry flat, do not hang.

frequently asked questions

Where can I buy Yellow Cottage Yarn

Local yarn shops hold a special place in my own life as I regularly attend my local Sip & Stitch and host workshops introducing others to my favorite things about crochet. The community and fellow crafters you meet through yarn is irreplaceable for me. That wouldn’t be possible without my local yarn shop. In order to best support local yarn shops, Yellow Cottage Yarn prioritizes their needs. Find our ever growing list of shops that carry Yellow Cottage Yarn

What fibers do you dye

Currently we dye 100% Cotton DK and also a 50% cotton 50% bamboo blend. Our chunky cotton is called Plush and it is also 100% Cotton. We see the beauty of natural fibers and the benefits of a lovely light fiber like cotton here in South Africa. It is appropriate for our climate.

Is your yarn soft

Oh yes! The Cotton DK, Bamboo/Cotton Blend, and Plush are all soft and pliable. These work up great for both knitting and crochet. We have chosen cotton that is spun to our specifications meaning it holds up well to the needles or the hook. These are great choices for projects such as amigurumi, house goods, blankets, jerseys, baby items and more.

Does your yarn come in cakes or skeins

At checkout you can specify if you want cakes or skeins for the hand painted Cotton DK. Our solid colors are cakes. Bamboo/cotton blend is also in a cake.

How big are your dye lots

Colors are dyed in small dye lots to ensure the best and most vibrant colors. For special projects feel free to reach out and we will be sure the yarn is dyed in a larger lot to match and be as consistent as possible. Hand-dyed dyed skeins can have subtle variances so for any project requiring multiple cakes, we recommend you alternate balls every few rows. It is a good idea to introduce a new cake slowly. If you are alternating it will assist with color differences not being too noticeable.

How do I use yarn from a skein
Please remember, if you order the hand painted yarns as a skein, you need to be prepared to cake the yarn using a yarn winder and a yarn swift before using it for your project.
